The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
